Inspiration
There are so many data sets out there to describe and share interesting stories about different countries but it can be so difficult to engage and relate. We've decided to create an interactive map to showcase different data sets and the deeper stories data tells, emphasising geographical context for insightful illustrations of time series data.
What it does
This tool visualises geographical time series data as a city skyscape, positioning large towers for high values and smaller towers for smaller values.
How we built it
We built pipelines to package files in a format that can be easily processed by our application, and uploaded them to our single page application. We then used the OpenMap SDK to convert our GPS coordinates to positions on our globe, and rendered a 3D skyscraper on the center of each location.
Challenges we ran into
Combining data from 4 different sources(the OECD, the UN, the IMF, and the ONS) into a unified format that can be displayed on a 3D surface, and determining an accurate location for each
