Inspiration
We were inspired by the steadfast growing technologies of AI and we wanted to incorporate that technology in an innovative fashion to address the shortcomings of transcription tools; it's inaccessible nature due to it being limited to nicely formatted text.
What it does
DeSciFiAI, a tool that allows for seamless transcription from text, no matter how illegible it is, hence, our name. Our deciphering tool is so out of this world, you could call it sci-fi. When paired with a screen reader, receive flawless text-to-speech.
How we built it
We built a subset of our original intentions, that is, an HTML form that accepts submissions of illegible text, which contributes to a database that will be used to train our model.
Challenges we ran into
The major challenge we ran into was the inability to actually implement the AI model due to inexperience. Instead, we used tesseract, an existing ICR, to demonstrate that there needs to be improvement in that a larger range of symbols (handwriting, written mathematical equations, poorly scanned pdfs, fonts undetected by screen readers, special symbols) can be deciphered.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of how far our ambition took us, although we stopped at the intersection between what we could do versus what ideally would like to achieve, we are proud of our results so far and the future of this AI tool.
What we learned
We learned how to slowly but surely spring our idea in to life by learning how to expertly utilize GitHub, how to customize a HTML website including a form, how to use an AI tool for demo, communication, and organization.
What's next for DeSciFiAI
Undoubtedly the next step for DeSciFi is to implement an actual AI tool that lives up to it's name, sci-fi level deciphering. Who knows, maybe you'll see it in the future!
