Inspiration

Dental insurance is expensive, leaving ⅓ of Canadians without coverage. But cost shouldn't restrict access to proper dental care for millions of people. Most dental diseases are entirely preventable, if you catch them early. By the time something hurts, the damage is already done. We built DentaGuide to close that gap: an AI-driven app that gives everyone access to the kind of early detection that used to require a dentist visit.

What it does

DentaGuide is a web-based agentic AI application that helps Canadians monitor and improve their dental health. Users set up a personalised profile with their dental background. Then every day, they complete a quick check-in logging their habits, symptoms, and an optional photo of their teeth. AI agents then provide instant teeth health analysis, analyze your daily data to uncover oral health trends, scan for risk patterns across 30 days of history, and generate a personalized dashboard so you always know exactly where your dental health stands.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, and CSS
  • Backend: FastAPI and Python
  • Database: Supabase and PostgreSQL
  • AI: Gemini AI API for visual dental photo analysis and risk detection
  • Auth: Supabase Auth with JWT sessions

Challenges we ran into

  • Determining which AI model gave the most accurate and responsible dental analysis from a photo
  • Understanding which significant dental symptoms to monitor as Computer Science students
  • Framing AI outputs responsibly so users understand it's a screening tool, not a diagnosis

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A full agentic pipeline that analyses habits, symptoms, and photos simultaneously
  • Building something that genuinely addresses a real gap in accessible healthcare for Canadians

What we learned

  • How capable modern AI models are at visual analysis tasks
  • How widespread the dental insurance gap really is in Canada, and how much of the damage it causes is preventable
  • How to build responsible AI health tools that are useful and can work with companies to build a real world impact

What's next for DentaGuide

We hope to continue improving the accuracy of DentaGuide's analysis to strengthen its credibility as a screening tool. We'd love to partner with Sun Life and the CDCP to allow users, especially lower-income families to go from identifying a flagged risk to receiving dental treatments.
