Inspiration
Currently, security is one of the main priorities to most people as they seek out the best and most affordable security systems. We, the creators of digit, aim to revolutionize the security industry by bringing new intelligence to home security through our doorbell prototype
What it does
digit. A smart security doorbell that uses image processing functionalities and email notifications to keep households and businesses secure
- Identifies who is at your door through facial recognition
- Sends instant email alerts with the name and live image of visitor
- Users can add recognizable individuals to Digit; others are “Unknown” and can be reported
How we built it
Hardware:
- Raspberry Pi 4 (Raspbian OS)
- Raspberry Pi Camera V2.1 Module
- Case Software:
- Thonny Python IDE
- OpenCV API
- Mailgun API
Challenges we ran into
- Extended periods of times to import libraries
- Live streaming video over a wireless network
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Integrating effective facial recognition technology into the video doorbell
What we learned
- As this was our first Raspberry Pi project, we learned about various functionalities that the device has to offer.
What's next for digit
- Integrate a wide array of sensors and electrical components to enhance the security provided by digit (Ultrasonic sensors, motion detectors, smoke detectors, servo motors, LCD displays, and alphanumeric keypads can be integrated to produce the best version of digit)
- Employ TensorFlow neural networks to ensure that the people detected in digit’s video feed are wearing masks to promote safety during COVID-19 pandemic
