Inspiration

As the number of people using the internet as a go-to news source increases, the number of poorly researched information, as well as click-bait followed by self diagnosis rises too.

What it does

We decided to create a Chrome Extension that allows for Verified Doctors to rate articles that they read and analyze, as well as a separate extension built for Patients or other people who are not professionals in the medical field, to view said ratings. This gives the person interacting on the Patient Extension a good sense of the quality of information the article contains before they read any further.

How we built it

Since Peter was more experienced in backend development, he contributed a major portion of the workload in that regard. He built the backend in Python/Flask, as well as contributed to portions of the front end, which are written in HTML, JavaScript, and CSS and helped Ryan with setting up the MySQL database.

Since Ryan had less experience in backend development, he contributed mostly to setting up the MySQL database, as well as designing the front end portion of the project.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we ran into was first coming up with an idea, and then coming up with the most efficient way to divide the work up between four people. Then later down the road, Ryan's MacBook Pro got the white screen of death and he had to use a laptop provided from the MLH Hardware store. We also had one of our original teammates drop out of the project. Along with this, the classic random program bugs that come along as you develop, and not having a clear understanding of certain topics held us back slightly when trying to deploy a project in the time frame we were given. However, we ultimately felt like we persevered and made really good progress despite everything we went through.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Peter - Doing full stack development in a project, making a full webapp in Python/Flask, being a major contributor to a project, working on basically no sleep.

Ryan - Learning how to use a MySQL database, learned how to create a chrome extension from scratch, working efficiently in a 24 hour time frame.

What we learned

How to efficiently divide contribution amount for each member of a hackathon team, for the next Hackathon that we go to.

What's next for doctoRATE

We hope to migrate this service from being just a chrome extension, to a full fledged website application that can allow you to create accounts, see what doctors around you have the most contributions to rating different sources on the internet, as well as displaying data based on how many contributions they've made for each branch of medical care. For example, displaying two dermatologists in the area that are close to you, except one has far more contributions to topics about health problems relating to skin than the other. Once you are displayed with a comparison, you can then be able to click on their profile and learn detailed information about their career.
