Unveiling the Challenge
Our journey began with a cosmic challenge from Foxbyte: "Digital Factory with Realtime 3D Technology." United by the spirit of innovation, we embraced the task of diving into the realms of Unity, tasked with constructing a dynamic scene. Our mission was to push the boundaries of reality by incorporating scanned assets from the makerspace, laying the foundation for an interstellar Digital Factory project.
Interstellar Adventure Awaits
DonutHunt, our brainchild, transcends traditional gaming platforms. Currently, it's a cross-dimensional delight, conquering Linux, Android, and any device with a browser through the mystical power of WebGL.
Crafting the Cosmic Odyssey
Armed with nothing but a regular laptop, we summoned the forces of Unity to bring our vision to life. The 3D models, like celestial artifacts, were captured using the enchanting Polycam app on an iPad Pro, harnessing its LiDAR sensor. MeshLab, our alchemical workshop, became the realm of post-processing magic.
Conquering the Cosmic Quandaries
In our pursuit of perfection, we initially set our sights on the mighty Intel RealSense LiDAR Camera L515. Alas, the journey proved treacherous as the absence of motion capturing demanded extensive post-processing. Undeterred, we pivoted to the enchanted iPad Pro and Polycam, where 3D models manifested effortlessly.
Unity, the cosmic maestro of game development, initially composed its symphony on a laptop. A revelation struck, birthing the idea of a mobile app. The cosmos demanded new controls, and thus, the mobile app's accelerometer became the navigator for our spaceship's single-axis voyage.
A web-based odyssey beckoned, offering a gateway to locked platforms. Alas, the mystical WebGL version of Unity, while accessible on the iPad, denied us control through the sacred motion sensors.
Triumphs in the Cosmic Tapestry
Our proudest achievement? We bridged the realms, melding reality and virtuality by capturing a real asset and seamlessly integrating it into our cosmic escapade. Motion-based control, where tilting left and right maneuvers the spacecraft, became our technological feat, enhancing the mobile gaming experience.
Lessons from the Cosmic Forge
Our cosmic journey unveiled profound truths:
- Donut Dimensions: iPads proved inadequate for scanning tiny donuts; the sensor's resolution had its cosmic limits.
- Beyond Specs: The Intel RealSense camera, with superior specs, succumbed to the might of the iPad Pro's all-encompassing prowess. It captured Lidar, Camera data, and motion, crafting 3D models sans the intricate mapping of each frame.
- Unity's Celestial Limits: Unity, our multi-platform muse, proved a versatile deity, yet not every feature bowed to its omnipresence. Diverse mechanisms birthed across platforms, a testament to the cosmic dance of game/motion control.
Cosmic Continuation: The Odyssey of DonutHunt
Our journey through the cosmos doesn’t end here. DonutHunt's next quest involves transcending the boundaries of two dimensions, evolving into a more immersive 3D experience. We envision a walkable gameplay on the cosmic factory floor, where machines become digital artifacts, scanned, post-processed, and seamlessly placed. The future holds the promise of real sensor signals influencing the game—a cosmic dance of interactivity and innovation awaits.
