Inspiration
With fast fashion on the rise, we were inspired to create an application that helps people find sustainable beauty and fashion alternatives that fit within and under their budget.
What it does
Our app suggests sustainable alternatives to beauty products that aren't affordable for college students. After users input some financial information, our web app will calculate the perfect budget for them. Then, it will break down their plan further to find out how much the user can spend within different want categories, such as dining, entertainment, fashion, and beauty. It takes users’ allotted budget for fashion/beauty and helps find sustainable alternatives that fit the broken-down budget.
How we built it
We used Flask as a framework and build our app using Python. We have a JSON file that stores some preliminary data that our Python parses through. The web app's front end is built with basic HTML/CSS.
Challenges we ran into
None of us had any web development experience, at all. We only had data science experience. However, we used the Flask web development framework in Python to build a prototype of our web app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
None of us had any experience with web development, so this was a big learning curve. We did like the general concept of our app because of all the hype over dupe products on TikTok and Instagram right now.
What we learned
None of us had any experience with web development before this hackathon — most of us came in with only data science experience. We truly had no idea what exactly we were getting into.
What's next for Affordable Allure
In the future, we would like to add a function where users can input recommendations for other sustainable alternatives not listed. For clothing in particular, users would be able to submit their own garments. We would also like to further expand on the other want categories, such as dining and entertainment. The app would recommend easy-to-make vegan/vegetarian recipes and find free entertainment nearby. We would also like to further expand on the financial literacy aspect of our app by providing lessons and strategies. Additionally, a gamification component would be added which would allow users to obtain points for completing lessons and staying within their budget, which they could later change for coupons and prizes by sustainable sponsors.
