Inspiration
SDGs. Showing that very small, daily incremental changes to lifestyle can lead to significant impact on the environment. In the long run, these small changes can add up to make a big difference and protect our future. It is also a chance for us to build a tool that makes people feel more responsible, giving them a chance to give back to society. - Doing good for society, making the atmosphere more livable for ourselves and the generations to come is our inspiration, goal and slogan.
What it does
Calculates the carbon footprint for every complete meal consumed with the aim of giving an idea of your meal's impact on the environment. The calculated value is compared to an avg value to show how well you did in terms of taking care of the environment when making responsible choices for your meals. It then also gives suggestions on how to reduce your carbon footprint. So like incentives sof scoring higher scores in a game, people get the incentive of getting better scores for this with the help provided thriugh the feedback generated.
How we built it
We used VS code to hardcode the website by using HTML, CSS styles sheet and Java Script. We devided the tasks within our team members after mind mapping the pages and functionality of our website.
Challenges we ran into
We initially wanted to use a quicker interface/developer tool like WIX but it was restrictive and not as cutomisable as we needed it to be so we shifted to hard coding to aim for functionality rather than graphics. We also found it challenging to build our project within the given time frame which was just one day so we had to restrict our ideas and focus one particular category but we hope that our model is a prototype for bigger models of the same kind. Other challenges were collecting data, having a sense of accomplishment and motivation to push the hours and achieve our goals.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to accomplish our goal which is to use the tool to calculate and improve the carbon footprint of your daily meals. We consume 3 meals a day and there are 365 days in a year which makes a significant impact if people use this tool to be mindful of their choice of meals. We are also proud that we wrote the code from scratch and still have a fucntional website inspite of not knowing each other from before this hackathon. All in all, we are proud of our collaboration, team work and memories we made together.
What we learned
We learnt that we should do a feasibility analysis and calculate an average of the the learning + implementation time that might be needed for a project before going into it. We should also have clearer plans so implementing is straight forward. More than anything, we learnt that eating and taking power naps is important to keep functioning. Being in a hackathon also encorages you to be open to many ideas even if it sounds difficult because you are in it with many others and the 36 hours are dedicated to making the project work.
What's next for EatEco
We would want to increase the data it holds, improve the graphics and add further categories to keep making it more and more useful in the daily lives of consumers. Even in the current state, if it is hosted and the link is given out, it can on it's own help reduce the carbon footpriont generated by our food/packaging consumption.
