Inspiration

Our inspiration was the food insecurity presentation by the QWERhacks speakers.

What it does

Our web application is a meal planner which keeps track of weekly spending and maintains user data about weekly meals.

How we built it

For our tech stack, we use React.js, Google Firebase, and libraries such as Material UI and React Router. We use GitHub for version control.

Challenges we ran into

Our initial challenge was setting up the base of the application for all four team members to begin developing. Two of our team members were new to React.js so we all worked together to overcome the learning curve and teach each other. Additionally, we struggled with using React hooks to fetch and update the user data in Firebase through the front-end. We solved these issues by reaching out for help with mentors at QWERhacks and discussing alternative solutions with other teammates. Another problem we ran into was with installing npm modules which caused dependency errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud to have a functional website which is able to take in user data and update in the backend effectively. We also learned a lot about using React.js and Github in order to solve the challenges we faced, specifically about anonymous functions and using git branches. Additionally, we all worked very well as a team to distribute the work and support each other.

What's next for EBTea

Our initial idea included a locator for EBT friendly and SNAP grocery stores/restaurants which we hope to implement in the future. Additionally, we hope to include nutrition ratings for each meal added to the planner in order to advise the user on which meals can be improved.
