Inspiration

There are about 34 million children in the world who are impaired in hearing. After speaking to multiple individuals who interact with people who have disabling hearing loss, I found out that there's a huge problem in deaf education, specifically, there's a communication gap between teachers and students with impaired hearing in schools.

With this information in hand, I set about devising a solution to bridge that communication gap

What it does

Echosign is a web app, that leverages Amazon's Speech-To-Text service, "AWS Transcribe", to provide real-time transcriptions during lectures. The words are also then converted to sign language giving students the option of following along with what suits them

How we built it

Following the example blog post provided by AWS that described how to implement the speech transcription service on a front-end web application, I reworked this to work as a backend nodejs service.

I searched online for a repository for sign-language hand signs to map the words transcribed to sign language.

The front end and backend services are served from a server with an NGINX proxy server

Challenges we ran into

  1. The AWS SDK doesn't have an implementation for sending web socket stream data to the transcription service. Due to this, I had to go about a roundabout method of sourcing the IAM credentials to make a secured call to the transcription endpoint

  2. Finding an efficient way of sending the audio packets via WebSocket from the front-end app to the back end service and then unto the transcription service and back again

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Implemented a method of loading environment variables from an S3 bucket using the AWS SDK

  2. Learning more about WebSockets and finding a way to forward WebSocket requests to another service

What's next for EchoSign

  1. Work on the Sign Language functionality to be an avatar properly using sign language
