Inspiration
Our team was driven by a desire to positively impact environmental sustainability. As waste reduction and reuse become increasingly critical in our fight against environmental degradation, we were inspired to create Eco Waze. Using Wall-E as a mascot, the app aims to engage users in a fun and meaningful way, encouraging them to think differently about what they consider waste.
What it does
Eco Waze is a platform that transforms the concept of waste by enabling users to buy, sell, or exchange used items effortlessly. It promotes sustainability by providing AI-driven suggestions for repurposing items. Additionally, the app serves as a community hub where users can learn about and participate in local sustainability events, further fostering a culture of environmental awareness and action.
How we built it
Our approach combined user-centered design with robust technological integration: • Background Research: Did some individual and group research to figure out the problems and then created an affinity diagram to come to a conclusion with a list of focused issues. • UX/UI Design: Using Adobe XD, we crafted an intuitive user interface that simplifies the process of listing and finding items. • AI Feature: Our AI feature, implemented with Python and TensorFlow, analyzes images of items to suggest possible reuse and repurposing methods.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the project, we encountered several challenges: -Deciding the target area for the application and how to actually keep track of the carbon emissions. • Integrating AI technology to accurately recognize and suggest uses for a wide range of items. • Ensuring the app's user interface is intuitive and accessible to all users, regardless of their tech savvy. • Building a community feature that effectively engages users and promotes active participation in sustainability initiatives.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Developing a fully functional prototype that has been well-received in user testing for its ease of use and impactful purpose. • Successfully integrating complex AI technology that brings real value to the user experience. • Creating a platform that not only serves a functional purpose but also educates and engages its community about sustainable practices.
What we learned
This project deepened our understanding of: • The intricacies of AI and machine learning, especially in image recognition. • The importance of community and educational aspects in apps focused on behavior change. • Advanced techniques in UX/UI design that prioritize simplicity and user engagement.
What's next for Eco Waze
Looking forward, we plan to: • Expand the AI's capabilities to include more languages and regional variances in items. • Grow our community features with more interactive and educational content.
