Inspiration
We want to become software engineers. We think this Hackathon would help us in gaining experience for it. Besides, we had participated in Game Making with Unity in the past year's GIIS Hackathon and lost, which makes us more determined to be in the top ranks this year.
Deforestation is happening all around the world. This game might give a small nudge to people to promote afforestation and undo the catastrophes that have occured to the environment and make it sustainable. That is why our name is called Ecolution - We want to start an Eco Revolution!
What it does
The game is a 2D platformer game. The aim of the game is to plant trees from seeds. The player sees how deforestation is occurring all around us and is on a quest to bring back life to earth. Each level, he undergoes various trials such as shooting machines and enemies which try to stop him, but it does not take away his determination. There are various power-ups around to make the game more interesting. At the end, he accomplishes his desire of environmental sustainability.
How I built it
I built it by downloading various asset packs and making each sprite into a prefab. I gave it the necessary properties (colliders, etc.) and attached the necessary scripts to them.
Challenges I ran into
I ran into multiple challenges such as glitchy behaviour, and collating all our individual work was a big hassle. Keeping the code neat and tidy became more and more tougher as we progressively wrote more and more code.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of learning and becoming fluent in C# in such a short time, coming from learning Python for a year. It was confusing to put semicolons and declare data types for the statistically typed language coming from a dynamically typed one. Furthermore, understanding the unity object system and getting all my teammates to collaborate and collectively make an app was a tough feat too.
What I learned
Making this game gave me an advanced view of the Unity Engine and the Unity Scripting API, and finally the C# coding language. It gave me a meaningful insight to the world of game development, and the hardships and fun in it. I would like to thank the Hackathon organisers for that.
What's next for Ecolution
We are looking to expand Ecolution to mobile platforms, such as IOS and Android, with touch control and get it on their respective app stores. Furthermore, we want to make this open source and available to download on the web for the public to play.
