Inspiration
Our inspiration arose from our team’s love of thrifting and sustainable shopping. We realized that this process was tough to do online however, so we created EcoShops to allow consumers to shop sustainably online.
What it does
Our website EcoShops is a platform that cross-examines products and links throughout the internet to help users find the most sustainable and eco-friendly option for their wants and needs.
With EcoShops, our website outlines the product's material composition, highlights the sustainable resources used, and gives some background information about the website and the company they are shopping from. Then it allows users to find second-hand products that are available on various sites that are upcycled versions of the product the consumer desires, offering a cheaper and sustainable solution. Our platform also allows users to find alternatives that are already sustainably produced and follow ethical guidelines. This way, users can find certified alternatives which are ethical and minimize the unnecessary waste that arises from buying new products at stores, allowing upcycled products to find a new home.
How we built it
We built this project using HTML, CSS and Javascript. To be able to code together we used the website repl.it where we all were able to simultaneously edit work through problems as a team.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into pertained to formatting certain elements on our site. However, after a lot of trial and error, we were able to have a clean layout. Our platform also currently works with only 2 products as we did not have the time to upload more or form a database. Another challenge we ran into was programming within CSS as our CSS was not working and to fix the issue our group needed to implement CSS within our HTML to allow the program to function
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Considering we had a small window of time, our team is very proud to have a working prototype up and running. We were all able to learn more about HTML and CSS throughout the process and add elements such as GIFS and separate pages. We were also able to add an option in our footer to have our page translated, making it accessible to all.
What we learned
Our team was able to strengthen our front-end design skills and learn how to collaboratively code.
What's next for EcoShops
In order to grow EcoShops, our next steps would be to import a database of all active products on the market to ensure that our platform can be applied to all items. We are also exploring making a chrome extension so that EcoShops can be more accessible for consumers.
