Inspiration
Too many young girls are now misinformed or uneducated about topics such as their health, their rights, etc. Many also do not have the resources to reach out to for help, or even have a good female role model to look up to. I want to change that. I want to create an app that would be easy to use, with everything in the same orderly place, and have it be pleasing to the eye. The fact that I wanted to helped out these young girls is the reason why I built Educated.
What it does
Educated aims to teach and support young girls and women everywhere and to better the world. Educated is a mobile application that allows users to see information and facts about women's health (ex. how birth control can help regulate period symptoms), female rights (ex. there were still state laws that prevented safe, legal abortions after Roe v. Wade was decided), and important statistics about topics ranging from depression to assault. There is also a flashcard feature that allows users to go through questions and answers of fun/non-so-fun facts about women throughout history. There is even a section on famous women who are successful. There is information on each featured woman, with a special hand-drawn picture, and a short description of them/their achievements.
How I built it
I used Xcode to put together the main structure of the Educated, and all of the code was coded in Swift. I also used Procreate to draw all of the images/arts throughout the project.
Challenges I ran into
There were many, many bugs everywhere because of structural code problems. There were also some times when the file would not sync or connect, so I had to learn to debug those. Also, I had an unusually long amount of time where I wasn't able to decided on a name.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am extremely proud of finishing Educated, especially with my indecision on the name. Knowing that it could be released into the world and improve it, makes me so happy beyond words. I feel that the theme/design/images (which I did all by myself/drew myself) are really goo, and I'm super proud of the way Educated came looking out. Swift isn't my strong suit, so I'm also super ecstatic that Educated is fully functional.
What I learned
I learned so many different things about Xcode, both big and small. Debugging my code really helped me understand the nitty-gritty of Swift and its properties. It has really helped me understand so much more about object-oriented languages and Apple's Xcode.
What's next for Educated
I really enjoyed working on this project! I really poured my whole heart and soul into this project. I believe that some young girls and women really do need the extra support, especially when it comes around to the education part, and I'm also so passionate on trying to fix the widespread misinformation. I am really looking forward to updating Educated with more information on it, including adding more statistics, history, flashcards, and facts (That means more famous women!!!). Hopefully one day, it will change the whole world for the better.
