ELECguide
The product we designed and created is ELECguide. A web app to help university students find an elective or unit to do in their studies. All this tool needs is past completed units, personal preferences and the app will return a list of eligible units that might interest the user. We chose to create this application because we all know the struggle of going through endless pages of the handbook to find the perfect elective and wasting so much time in the process. ELECguide is the solution to this.
Benefits
It provides an easy and time efficient way to find electives by reducing the user’s browsing time through various faculty unit handbooks to find the appropriate unit. The units entered are stored in local storage and thus there is no need to enter the units completed multiple times. Users can also narrow their results through the filter options such as campus, area of study, semester and rating. Reviews and ratings from past students are accessible through the web app, this gives an insight of the unit experience.
How we built it
This app was built using HTML, CSS and javascript. Currently the app’s HTML (design) is only completed, meaning the app is incomplete, the functions do not work. This was due to the challenges we met during the building process. However we are sure of how the app works and created a mock of it in the pitch video.
Challenges
A major challenge we found in this project was that one of our team members ended up being unavailable for the duration of the hack sprint resulting in the rest of the team of only three members having a higher workload. Another challenge was the limited experience of the team, not all members had experience with javascript, css and HTML, our chosen languages, hence learning and applying what we wanted to achieve was difficult.
