Inspiration

What inspired us to create this website was not only out own struggles as women in STEM but also our peers who we see facing the same issues as us in a mainly male dominating field. We wanted to create something that would help support women in male dominated fields where we could discuss the importance of equality and diversity.

What it does

Our website serves as a beacon of inspiration for women venturing into historically male-dominated fields. Through a blend of inspiring videos and insightful articles tailored to women in STEM, we aim to empower our audience. Additionally, our inclusive forum offers a safe space for women to voice their thoughts, questions, and concerns without reservation. Our overarching goal is to bolster the confidence of women stepping into workplaces where they may encounter minority status and bias, by fostering a supportive community dedicated to their success.

Our home page has a summary of what we do and features a carousel to spotlight on accomplishments of women. We also have a page to find female mentors, a FAQ page featuring key facts and statistics, and login page for our forum.

How we built it

We utilized React, Express.js, and Node.js to create our project. We also used a variety of libraries, such as Bootstrap, to add to our UX/UI. We used Unsplash to find royalty free photos. To guide us, we found online articles and tutorials to be helpful. For development purposes, we tested the website on our local computers.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges that we ran into included syntax errors, and implementing some features such as the navigation bar and the accordion for the FAQ page. The forum page was also difficult as it incorporated backend components.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our first React project, so we’re proud we were able to do so much with it. We are also proud of how many features we were able to add. We worked hard on the the UX/UI and feel it is aesthetically pleasing and intuitive. We also feel our mission and objectives are well needed today.

What we learned

Through creating this website, we not only learned about a wide variety of web development tools, we also learned what it means to be a woman in STEM. From learning about the React library to learning about gender discrimination in the workforce, this project has been an eye-opening experience for everyone involved.

What's next for ElevateHer

The next step for our ElevateHer team is to deploy this website online, as well as improve the SEO algorithm in order to reach a wider audience and help to uplift as many people as possible.
