Inspiration

Because traveling can be very expensive for college students, to reduce the cost, carpooling and trip sharing have become more popular. Although organizations and universities usually provide affordable trips and transportation, the supplies are limited and insufficient. Our team would like to create an alternative platform that members can have better access to affordable trips and safe and reliable travel buddies while expanding their network in the community.

What it does

Expedit is a travel buddies searching and trip matching platform that connects you with people in your community. Expedit allows you to host, join, and share your new journey with other uni fellows, whether you are a driver or a passenger. Since safety is our priority, all members are required to register and verify their identity using the organization's email. The early iterations of the project will be limited only to the UW-Madison community.

Once signing in, the users can choose to host or join a journey. Our platform offers 2 types of journeys: ride (traditional carpool) and trip (travel buddies). Before deciding to join a trip or accept a passenger, important information such as picture, name, and age will be available to view.

How we built it

During the work time of the hackathon, we built a demo version of the website version of our project using React. If the development continues, the backend part of the website will be required and played a huge role in scaling the system.

Challenges we ran into

We faced several challenges while building this project such as a lack of expertise in frontend web development. Most of the codebase is not in the best design pattern and needs a huge code factorization before moving into the next phase of development. On the non-technical side, some of our concepts are difficult to be transformed from an abstract idea to the actual implementation, such as how to represent information to the users and how to teach the user to use the application.

What's next for Expedit

In the future, the scale of our website will not be limited to the UW-Madison community. In the next phase, we would like to extend the service to other colleges in the Madison area such as Edgewood college. Then, we will expand it to all other college campuses across the country, where we could add support for the more complicated trips. We also plan to include a large-sized non-university organization in the future.
