Inspiration

We were inspired by neighborhood watch apps like Citizen, which empower communities by sharing real-time information about local events and potential threats. Seeing how these platforms help people stay informed and safe, we wanted to create a tool that specifically addresses the need for quick and reliable alerts about ICE activity. Our goal was to provide vulnerable communities with a centralized, accessible way to share and receive critical information, fostering solidarity and safety.

What it does

EyeSeeICE allows users to upload photos with location data, which automatically places a pin on a shared map. This map provides real-time updates about ICE-related activities, helping community members stay aware and respond quickly. New reports are displayed in the activity tab, ensuring users can easily track the latest sightings. Additionally, we incorporated a "red card" feature available in multiple languages. These red cards provide information on legal rights during encounters with immigration enforcement, which users can quickly access and share when needed.

How we built it

We built EyeSeeICE using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, combining these core web technologies to create an interactive and responsive user experience. We integrated an embedded map API to display user-generated location data dynamically. The app processes geolocation metadata from uploaded images, automatically mapping reports without requiring manual input. This functionality allows for faster, more accurate sharing of information. Throughout development, we focused on creating an intuitive interface that prioritizes accessibility and ease of use.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a verification system to prevent the spread of misinformation and fraudulent ICE sightings. Ensuring the accuracy of reports is crucial for community trust and user safety. We explored various options, such as requiring multiple reports to confirm a location and implementing community-driven moderation. Additionally, working with geolocation data presented technical challenges, particularly in extracting and processing metadata from user-uploaded images while maintaining privacy and security.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a platform that centralizes critical information about ICE activity, filling a gap left by the impermanence of social media updates. By offering a dedicated space for these reports, we empower communities to act swiftly and stay informed without relying on platforms that may remove or bury crucial content. Our multilingual red card feature is another achievement we value, as it ensures more people—regardless of language barriers—can access and understand their legal rights during high-stress situations.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we gained valuable insights into the complexities of web and app development, particularly when working with real-time data and geolocation services. We also learned about the importance of designing for community safety and user privacy. Beyond technical skills, this project deepened our understanding of how technology can serve marginalized communities and the responsibility that comes with building tools for social impact.

What's next for EyeSeeICE

Moving forward, we aim to enhance EyeSeeICE’s functionality to improve user safety and data accuracy. This includes developing a more robust verification process to filter out false reports, improving location accuracy through advanced geocoding methods, and strengthening user privacy measures. We also plan to expand our multilingual support and explore partnerships with community organizations to increase the platform’s reach and reliability. Our ultimate vision is to create a trusted, community-driven tool that empowers people to protect themselves and their neighbors in times of uncertainty.
