Inspiration

From our individual and collective experiences on code sharing and open source forums and websites, we have noticed that the nature of such platforms are not beginner friendly, nor do they provide realistically actionable programming advice. Often the users on such sites are derogatory towards others, sometimes to the point of harassment. This is our way of trying to prevent that. Currently there has been a very public push to have a more equal gender gap in tech, we believe that a beginner friendly platform is essential to maintaining this effort.

What it does

We're an all female community of programmers. Our website not only provides a judgement free platform to improve code, it also connects female programmers with others in their area. We do not not allow complete modification of code as a form of critique, rather we believe in actionable, specific, and kind feedback. Users will be able to create a profile that will have their occupation, location, and social links. On the platform they will be able to find other women in their area who are working on projects and contribute to their development with the incentive of a point system. We hope that this platform will encourage more women to continue on in the field of computer science. Having a supportive network is just as important as having a solid knowledge base.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript for the front end. The backend was developed first using Sqlite and then Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

The backend is still currently under development. At the moment only a few users are able to sign up on the site. In the near future we hope to expand and open up to a larger user base.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are satisfied with our aesthetic material design, as well as the purpose of the website.

What we learned

We became more intimate with the difficulties of creating an extensive backend for such a large site.

What's next for Fem Feed

We plan on creating a scalable and efficient backend to launch the site for the public. We also plan on developing the feedback functionality.
