Inspiration
FemmeTrail was inspired by the need for greater digital privacy and safety, particularly for women navigating online spaces where they may encounter harassment, stalking, or other forms of digital abuse. The increasing integration of social media and online platforms into daily life highlighted the importance of understanding and managing one's digital footprint to protect personal information and ensure online safety. We wanted to create a solution that would not only analyze a user's digital footprint but also provide personalized recommendations for enhancing their online privacy settings and safety.
What it does
FemmeTrail is an app that offers several key features to help users manage their online presence and enhance their privacy and safety:
Digital Footprint Analysis: The app can analyze a user's digital footprint across various online platforms, including social media, messaging apps, and public records.
Privacy Settings Recommendations: Based on the digital footprint analysis, the app can recommend personalized privacy settings for the user's social media accounts and other online platforms.
Risk Assessment and Safety Planning: The app includes a feature for assessing the user's risk level and creating personalized safety plans. It also provides access to organizations and resources for education and support.
How we built it
FemmeTrail was built and prototyped using Figma, a collaborative interface design tool. The development process involved designing user interfaces, integrating data analysis algorithms, and creating a seamless user experience. The app was designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, allowing users to easily navigate through its features and access personalized recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
Collaboration Issues: Coordinating efforts among team members, especially when working remotely, presented challenges in terms of communication and workflow management.
Ideation Phase: We initially struggled to refine our ideas and narrow down the scope of the app, leading to delays in the development process.
Technical Implementation: Integrating with third-party APIs and implementing complex algorithms for digital footprint analysis required extensive research and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the challenges we faced, we're proud of several accomplishments:
Prototype Development: Successfully building and prototyping the app in Figma, allowing us to visualize and iterate on the design before proceeding with development.
Algorithm Development: Developing algorithms for digital footprint analysis and privacy settings recommendations that provide valuable insights to users.
Team Collaboration: Overcoming communication barriers and establishing effective collaboration strategies to keep the project on track.
AI Understanding: Gaining a deeper understanding of how AI works, particularly for team members with no prior exposure to the field. This newfound knowledge laid the foundation for future endeavors.
Real-World Contribution: Contributing to real-world impact and prioritizing inclusivity through our project, fostering a more inclusive digital space reaffirms our commitment to positive change.
What we learned
Throughout the development process, we learned valuable lessons about collaboration, project management, and user-centric design. We gained insights into the complexities of online safety and the importance of providing personalized solutions to address individual needs and concerns.
What's next for FemmeTrail
In the future, we plan to expand and enhance FemmeTrail with the following features:
Additional Social Media Platforms: Integrating with more social media platforms to provide comprehensive digital footprint analysis and privacy recommendations.
AI Integration: Leveraging artificial intelligence technology to improve the accuracy and efficiency of digital footprint analysis and risk assessment.
Community Engagement: Building a community around FemmeTrail to provide support, resources, and educational content on online privacy and safety.
Team
We are a team of four black students skilled in data science, data analytics, and user interface (UI) design. This interdisciplinary collaboration has led us to explore the possibilities offered by emerging technologies. Baddies in Tech Women's Right Buildathon provided us with the ideal platform to create a tool contributing to the community that brought us together.
