Inspiration
As people who are/were first-generation/low income college students, we know better than anyone how difficult it is to be a trailblazer. Our experiences inspired us to come up with a tool that can help ease the pains of current FGLI students by proving a wealth of information and knowledge that we wish we had. Combining socioeconomic backgrounds with technological backgrounds inspired us to provide this solution.
What it does
Our tool allows students to ask and answer questions, connect with professionals, and access a hub of resources that are tried and true.
How we built it
We used the Django Framework which includes a total development using Python and Bootstrap HTML. Each different aspect of the project was created using the various options offered in Django in the form of Models (Database tables) and Forms to gather data and display it to users.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge we ran into was deciding upon final features and components to add onto the project. We all feel very passionate about paying it forward and helping those that may find themselves within the same situations we all did. There were many things we wished to develop, but were too constrained on time to get to. However, with strong communication and planning using an agile board, we were able to narrow down on the features we wished to see first.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We are proud to provide a safe place where FGLI students will be able to ask questions and have some relief from the many challenges that come with being a FGLI student.
- We are proud of exploring new frameworks and tech stacks to create a fully-functioning product with user roles and user interaction.
What we learned
- How to fix merge conflicts
- Working with database migrations
- Django framework and Python libraries
- Web development (routing, requests, passing data, etc)
- HTML and Bootstrap to make user interfaces
What's next for FGLI Overflow
We want to extend the functionality for connecting students with professionals. The plan is to allow students to schedule 1-on-1s with professional mentors and have a verbal conversation.
