Inspiration

What inspired us to build FIKA Network was the collective struggle we and many others face when trying to network, either on LinkedIn or in person. Many people find it awkward to reach out to others and just simply start a conversation for the purpose of getting a job or even breaking into the industry itself. FIKA Network aims to solve this problem by eliminating the “reaching out” aspect all together!

What it does

When an account is created, FIKA Network uses a flow chart to connect mentees to their perfect mentor. A match is then immediately found and it is up to their discretion whether they would like to have a coffee meetup either in person or virtually.

How we built it

React, css and javascript were used for the frontend of the website.

Challenges we ran into

Learning react and creating a functional website within 24hrs was the biggest challenge we ran into, along with figuring out how to implement apis. This whole process took up most of our time as we were inexperienced with both of these areas and thus most of our time was taken up with debugging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The one accomplishment that we are extremely proud of was our ability to learn react within the given time and being able to create a website using it. As well as being able to connect the Auth0 login API, despite having no prior experience with using APIs.

What we learned

During the TOHack our team has worked hard on FIKA Network. However all of us were pretty new to hackathons and had a basic idea of coding overall. For our project we decided to create a website however none of us had backend experience before. On top of that none of us really knew how to use API’s too well either. As we progressed on with our project we learned from tutorials as well as a mentor who helped us with setting up our site and gave us pointers. We've learned basic ideas of web development, how to use the basics of google cloud and how to incorporate API into backend as well.

What's next for FIKA Network

After the TOHacks is over, we plan to continue to enhance FIKA Network to have an official site where those entering a new field and a mentor can approach one another without awkward moments. We’ll continue improving and testing out the site while also getting a fully listenced domain and potentially launch it when we see no error to be found. Although as of now we are only creating a demo of FIKA Network, we hope to see it expand and grow in the future as each of us keep learning and expanding our knowledge on web development.
