How we built AML Customer Risk Analytics Portal
What inspired us to build this project was the critical need for financial institutions to efficiently assess customer risk while maintaining compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. We recognized that analysts often struggle with fragmented data and complex risk factors that are difficult to visualize and understand quickly. Through building this portal, we learned how to create intuitive data visualizations that transform complex financial metrics into actionable insights, and how to design user interfaces that prioritize both functionality and user experience. The project was built using React with TypeScript for type safety, Tailwind CSS for responsive styling, and Lucide React for consistent iconography, implementing a comprehensive risk scoring algorithm that weighs multiple factors including credit scores, transaction patterns, AML flags, and behavioral indicators. The biggest challenge we faced was creating a realistic risk assessment engine that could dynamically generate detailed explanations for each customer's risk rating while ensuring the synthetic dataset maintained authentic relationships between financial metrics. We also had to balance the complexity of displaying detailed AML information without overwhelming the user interface, ultimately solving this through progressive disclosure and contextual information panels.
