Inspiration
The inspiration for this project rooted in our passion for todays issue of wild fires throughout the United States. Many do not realize the severity of these fires until it is too late and breath in low quality air for an extended period of time that may have long term effects.
What it does
This google chrome extension uses your location and nearby data to automatically update you about possible surrounding fires and low quality air through browser popups.
How I built it
We used python for back end and html, css, and java script for the front-end to create this google chrome extension. Additionally, we used google cloud to
Challenges I ran into
There were many different challenges when creating this extension. None of us have made a google chrome extension before so there was a slight learning curve. Syntactically it was tough figuring out how to use json and finding accessible data took up a large chunk of time
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Within 24 hours we were able to put together a framework of what we think could be a life saving program for some people.
What I learned
Our whole group learned many different new skills. This is most of our first hackathon and most of our knowledge surrounds java and python. It was exciting to dive into using html, css, and google-cloud as these are different skills and data bases we are all relatively new to.
What's next for Fire Forecaster
We hope to be able to fully run the chrome extension with no issues in the future. Ideally, we would love to collaborate with local governments to raise awareness and increase usage of our chrome extension. Additionally, we would want to improve functionality and conduct user testing.
