Inspiration

It is hard to find roommates while studying at Imperial. It is super hard to find roommates when you've been in lockdown for a year and have no friends. FlatHunt aims to resolve this issue, bringing people together through our web app to post about accommodation and ask questions.

What it does

On FlatHunt, you can upload "posts" about yourself, and any accommodation you are looking to rent. Include whether you are a night owl, if you like to play the drums, or bake. Other users can ask questions based on your post. Include a friend as a referee on your profile so prospective roommates can investigate you!

How we built it

We used JavaScript to build the front-end, and Firebase to support the back-end. We worked together using a Discord server and WhatsApp for communication.

Challenges we ran into

We did not know how to use JavaScript or Firebase yesterday. We have never seen each other in real life. We are all in different time zones. Internet connectivity sucks when compared to Queen's Hall wifi. Everyone had varying levels of confidence in GitHub.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We worked together virtually with people we had never met, to deliver a functional product.

What we learned

Learning new things overnight is both fun and not fun.

What's next for FlatHunt

Extending the question-answer capability on each post. Having referees also leave comments on a user's profile page. The ability to upload photos. A map-based representation of all the different accommodations available. Mobile application
