Inspiration
Research shows that bilingualism is beneficial to brain health for seniors. Switching from one language to the other activates areas of the brain responsible for executive functioning. This involves the same area that is responsible for completing tasks. When my mother heard about this idea, she was thrilled and could not wait to start learning.
What it does
Fluently helps users improve their English or learn a new language. Using voice interaction, users can listen, practice, and hold conversations to effectively learn a new language
How we built it
We used voiceflow's solution to create the lesson flows.
Challenges we ran into
We had a number of challenges; the first challenge was working with dual languages English and French, (although Alexa supports these languages). Since we ran into some issues, for this contest we are showing a proof of concept of learning English for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) users. Second challenge was how to teach a language in a conversational manner only, without visual text. (We decided to work with 1 modality of voice)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a voicebot which feels like a real English teacher and a conversational pen pal buddy.
What we learned
We learned that Fluently can really empower users and they felt delighted when speaking to the bot.
