Inspiration
When we walk around the city, or take the metro, the only thing we see is people looking down at their phones. We can always count on the fingers of our hands how many people are looking around and aren't being hypnotized by their phone
What it does
Fonos is a mobile application that gives you the tools to free yourself from the distractions your phone presents. We believe that people can only change if they want it themselves so we built an application that anyone could pick up and customize to their needs.
How we built it
We made the frontend using Expo and React Native. For the core concept, we made our very own VPN to filter any traffic, blocking user set domains along the way.
Challenges we ran into
VPNs have very little coverage on react native, and the small amount of librairies that have been made for it date from 3 to 6 years ago. Because of this and the general pain the networking is with firewalls gave us a very difficult time connecting to the vpn besides having all the information.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of our dive into the unknown. We had done very little react native before and neither of us knew anything about VPNs or networking in general.
What we learned
We learned the fundamental concepts of VPNs and how to manage firewall security alongside many other required things to make a successful VPN
What's next for Fonos
The next step would be polishing the user experience, and improving the customisabity to give the user to fine tune the application to their liking.
