Inspiration

Ever since Jen and I moved off campus, we've noticed a majority of our spending goes towards eating at restaurants. We realize that this problem is caused by two main factors: forgetting about the groceries we buy and not knowing how to find the correct recipes. We quickly realized that if we built an app to notify us about groceries and retrieve recipes, we could start saving money and eating healthier!

What it does

The user inputs a grocery item they have and its expiration date. Once all of their food is uploaded on the app, they can easily find recipes that utilize the ingredients they have.

How we built it

We used React-Native to build the front end and handle any backend operations we have.

Challenges we ran into

Neither of us has done app development before so this project was completely new territory. We mainly struggled with strange dependencies and connecting our backend operations to our frontend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have a working app that does what we set out to originally do! We can successfully enter any food item and its expiration date and immediately receive the subsequent recipes.

What we learned

We learned how to create and finish a React Native app from start to finish, how to simultaneously develop a back-end and front-end, and how to efficiently work as a team.

What's next for FoodSmart

Our next plan is to add in a roommate/family feature. Users will be able to join a family group and add items to one collective ingredient list.
