Inspiration

In a world where social media divides us all by redirecting our attention elsewhere, frend.ly aims to bring us back to the present. Hence, there is no i in frend.ly ;)

What it does

Find people nearby to you with similar interests so you can have a nice frend.ly conversation. It helps to physically bring people together by flagging up people in close proximity to you and can work as an ice breaker, conversation starter or simply some fun between new friends.

How we built it

Using Android Studio and the Google Nearby Connections API.

Challenges we ran into

We spent a lot of time researching how to use Bluetooth to transmit files between devices in a decentralised manner with no real success, however we later discovered the Google Nearby Connections API which does just that :)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Over half of our group had no prior experience with app development and Android Studio before IC Hack so we learnt a lot about these fields in a very short space of time. In addition none of us have ever worked with decentralised file transmission so this was also a huge learning curve.

What we learned

Bluetooth is Evil, Google is God.

What's next for frend.ly

frend.ly has infinite potential. In the future it could be developed to suggest events that relate to you and the people with your shared interests. We also have the idea of implementing a points/rewards system that allows you to collect points by connecting your device to a friend you have met on frend.ly, potentially giving more rewards to finding people with rarer hobbies to encourage you to meet new people etc.
