On average, 47% of households in 2019 threw away fresh vegetables, 2.65 Litres of Fresh food was getting waster per household per week. We don’t throw away money, so why do we throw away food?

Fridgly aims to be the game-changer in becoming your greatest companion for food and recipes alike. Fridgly seeks to solve the problem of food wastage by helping you keep track of what is in your pantry and efficiently recommending you recipes to food that you would want to eat. Fridgly understands that pantry tracking can be tedious, and this is why Fridgly uses OCR technology. The app requires you to scan your receipts from thousands of different stores, so you can spend less time worrying about manually putting in items and more time thinking about what to eat. Fridgly also aims to take the hassle out of shopping, when your pantry is running low on something, Fridgly will notify you making your shopping experience effortless.

Fridgly was designed with a simple yet effective UI. We wanted something that looked really appealing but not overwhelming. We wanted to keep users engaged, and that is why we wanted to gamify the app. providing achievements and difficulty levels. Fridgly was built in Android Studio using Java, with the hope to start with Android devices. The application uses Google’s Machine Learning to read receipts. We needed to store various items to both have Fridgly look up and store, and we used SQLite, for both the simplicity and the ever-availability of it.

The team found difficulty in getting used to the Android Studio system, many used it for the first time, and that made understand libraries just more difficult. Additionally, one of the greater challenges was trying to incorporate various APIs that the team has never used before, which slowed down the progress significantly, and limited the scope to which the team could code. Nonetheless, the team has tried their best, and has learnt the extent of their abilities and understood what was missing in their coding repertoire.
