Inspiration
After countless starving nights, with no information available except for an ancient spreadsheet made by King Tut himself, we decided to make an easily accessible platform for Gators to know where they can find their next meal to stop those starving nights.
What it does
It uses an existing online database and converts it into a more user-friendly presentation by including the locations of all campus restaurants on a map of the UF campus along with easy access to every Gator Dining location's open and close timings.
How we built it
Using the google cloud console maps api, and a github repository of html, css, and js files we were able to design a website with a custom-made map with markers denoting the locations, names, and hours of all Gator Dining locations while they are open.
Challenges we ran into
The google cloud maps api borders were quite challenging to tackle as they just wouldn't act as hard borders for quite a while. Working with info windows, it would keep multiple open windows open and the user had to manually close the tabs. We overcame this challenge by having a singular info window object that was updated from information stored in the markers. We also had quite a struggle learning and implementing all the js, html, and css code in the short time we had.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As this was our first time project, and as having little project experience our ability to make the end product that's as visually appealing and functional as we were able to make it and also being something that we would genuinely use, we were very proud at the end result.
What we learned
We were able to learn to interact with others through github, code HTML, CSS, and JS, and front-end development along with the google cloud console api.
What's next for GatorMaps
We hope to implement many new features including bus tracking, etc, as well as upload this to the internet.
