Inspiration
Imagine a city where accidents, pit holes on roads and water drainage related issues are not just just inconveniences, but preventable tragedies. That's the vision behind GeoInsights, a project developed from the desire to harness the power of location data to make our communities safer and more resilient and to reach the governments as soon as possible.
What it does
Geoinsights highlights the growth of using social media data, particularly geo-referenced images, in disaster , crisis management and accidents. The goal is to develop a mobile app that categorize ground-level images shared by citizens, aiding emergency responders and administrators in addressing various problems effectively. This app aims to enhance situational awareness, assist with financial loss assessment, and provide valuable insights that are challenging to obtain through traditional sensors or remote sensing methods.
How we built it
Our solution works by extracting geo-referenced images on social media. We collect these images tagged with location data and locate these places on a map, marking the problem areas in red using google map api. When you click on a mark, you can view the problem details such as title, description, photos and respond to them. we have done user authentication. You can also manually report problems using your phone's camera, capture it’s location and add the data into the map. By this way, we create a user-friendly app where you can easily see and report water-related problems in your area and accidents, other problems such as pothhole which help the administration to solve such problems with great ease. The overall project was a mobile application build using react native.
Challenges we ran into
Scalability and Integration:deploying the project across large and diverse area, Data Accuracy:Ensure the accuracy and completness of collected data,user-reported incidents, can be difficult overcoming procastication through self motivation and the due to the peers!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
IIdentified critical risk areas: Pinpointing specific locations where targeted interventions could prevent accidents or mitigate flood damage. Reduced accident rates or minimized flood damage in pilot areas: Providing tangible evidence of the project's positive impact. Developed accurate and predictive models: Demonstrating strong correlations between geographical factors, weather patterns, and accident/flood risks.
What we learned
we were so enthusiatic and paved our way to keen learning throughout the hackathon and this hackathon been the platform to learn new technologies espically react native mobile app development, ability to work in groups, managing team and being collabrative and motivated to learn new technologies from our fellow mates.overall this hackathon had been a medium to learn new things from fellow mates!
What's next for Geoinsights
Scaling the project to new cities and regions: Adapting the models and infrastructure to diverse contexts and tackling challenges specific to different environments. Integrating with additional data sources: Incorporating real-time traffic flow, air quality, or social media data to gain even deeper insights and improve predictive capabilities.
