Inspiration

We were inspired by the idea of physical geocaching and were trying to combine the different elements of monetary/prize rewards, local/geographic interaction, social media, and proximity chat to invent a new type of social media network.

What it does

Geospace allows users to explore the neighborhoods around them, interacting with other residents or visitors, making connections and supporting local businesses, and leaving messages (and eventually multimedia/prizes/money) all around town.

How we built it

We used Firebase for the database, and HTML, CSS, and JS for the front end. The Mapbox library was amazing for setting up the beautiful 3D map.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled a little bit with the Checkbook API, but we got everything in our MVP working. We will definitely have utilizing money as a reward for geocaches as a goal for future development.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are so proud of having a working prototype of our project. With so few team members and one complete beginner on our team, we worked hard to make sure everyone on our team understood what was going on and learned a lot in the process. We took on the challenge of developing a novel social network and a way to make people socially interconnected in a completely different way - and we’re really excited about the concept! We managed to achieve what we defined as the MVP features, and we will definitely continue to work on our project in the future. We were able to utilize Firebase and the Mapbox library to leave “geocaches” or beautiful messages anywhere around the world.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how to use the Mapbox library and how to code in a crunch. It was great to ideate a totally new concept, figure out what technologies we needed, and build it out in such a short timeframe.

What’s next for geospace

We are looking to add proximity chat for visitors to interact directly with one another and video messages from local businesses, to add multimedia messages around the world, and to allow for more users/accounts.
