Inspiration
We found that finding friends or upperclassmen who have been in our shoes and can help us with difficult classes can be a challenge. Often times there are many tutoring services offered in State College, but many are expensive companies whose aim is for you to learn the test material, not so much the subject. It seems that many students are willing to help out those in need should a friend or stranger reach out for help. Be it in a study room, library table, or asking an older looking student in your class's building; People seem to be very willing to help students struggling to learn tough material because in order to progress in the same major they had to go through the same process. That was the basis that drove us to develop this app, so that students might have an easier time connecting with classmates to help them learn.
What it does
Gathers information about tutors with minimal outreach requirement on the students' part so that students seeking aide for a certain class can find people who are confident in the material and willing to tutor.
How we built it
We built this app in Java using Android Studio
Challenges we ran into
Making an Android app was a new challenge for all of us, so we spent a great deal of time learning how the software works to properly implement our ideas. Also we worked hard to setup a database to hold the information for our tutors' profiles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We weren't sure how we would approach building this app with none of us having prior experience with making an Android app, but we were determined to try our best and produce what we could. We managed to make an app that we believe is a well made prototype for our idea, after hours of research and work.
What we learned
Android Studio is a great tool, but requires time to learn all of the features it holds. Teamwork takes coordination, commitment, and works as a support system to keep people moving forward.
What's next for GitHelp
In the future, we would like to implement a tutor rating system and also a tudor list organized using student data to place tutors who we believe are similar in personality/work-ethic at the top of the list of tudors shown to students. The philosophy behind this is that tudors who are similar in personality will better understand how to teach the students seeking help.
