Inspiration

The beginning –

LENSFEST 2022! The event that introduced me to the magic I can create with LensStudio and SnapChat. Before attending the event, I had a very basic understanding of SnapChat. I had never used it before and honestly, I didn’t want to use it. I hated the concept of messages disappearing after 24 hours. What motivated me to attend the event was the AR technology. I am a big AR fan and I love to experiment with it.

I believe I am a Krishna bhakt and lately I have been looking for answers about just everything. I came across a statement somewhere that said all the knowledge you gain should be used for the service of Krishna is some form or the other. This statement inspired me to create “Gopi”.

What it does

“Gopi”, is a devotional lens. It displays the tilak on the forehead with “Radhe” written on both the cheeks. There are two buttons that allow the user to interact with the lens. Button “tilak”, allows the user to learn the significance on the tilak’s structure while button “Radhe” allows the user to change the color of the text on the cheeks.

How I built it

I used LensStudio to create the entire lens. The 2D “Tilak” and “Radhe” in the lens was created using Adobe Express. I used Canva to create the logo of the lens. Snap docs were of great help.

Challenges I ran into

This was the first time I was using LensStudio so I struggled a little with the working of the same in the beginning. There was a problem with the orientation of the 2D text images on the cheeks. They kept rotating 90 degrees to what I had set. Eventually, I sorted this by making two different FaceImages for both the cheek and grouping them together.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

The lens itself is a big accomplishment for me as this was the first time I was working with LensStudio. This is my first lens for Snapchat and I feel in the course of developing it, no matter how basic it might seem, I have learnt a lot, experimented a lot and I have also failed at a few attempts. And I think those mistakes made me experiment even more. I a proud of myself trying out my hand at lens creation and making it public for the people. I am proud of using my skills to create something devotional.

What I learned

I learnt to work with LensStudio and am looking forward to discovering each of its features and exploring them to the fullest.

What's next for Gopi

Next up for “Gopi”? I am not sure. Honestly, I haven’t really thought of it. But I do believe that I would like to add a few more features to it; like, maybe, put a few shokas from Bhagwad Gita with their meanings. I know people use SnapChat to have fun and enjoy. Nevertheless, I would like to make SnapChat the platform for everything – right from having fun with friends to learning with friends. And I doubt there is any loss in sharing knowledge.
