Inspiration

The fight against climate change demands innovative solutions. We were inspired by the power of games to engage and educate, recognizing their potential to drive real-world impact. Traditional methods of gathering data on effective climate policies, such as surveys, can be tedious and fail to capture the complexities involved. Green Globe was born from the desire to create an engaging platform that leverages cutting-edge AI technology to gather valuable insights while fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and trade-offs inherent in tackling air pollution.

What it does

Green Globe is a gamified web application that empowers users to step into the shoes of a policymaker tackling air pollution in Cosmoriya, a fictional nation grappling with severe air quality issues. Through interactive gameplay and stunning 3D visualizations powered by Three.js, players implement policies, observe their impact on a dynamic map, and witness the consequences unfold in real-time. Our integration with the Gemini AI analyzes each policy, predicting its short and long-term effects on air quality, the economy, and societal well-being. This data, gathered through user interactions, provides invaluable insights into effective policymaking, moving beyond theoretical models to real-world application.

This gives researchers valuable data as they can see which policies worked best and it also shows users about how it is not always easy to implement policies that reduce aqi and effect climate change since implementing good policies can backfire (like shutting down factories that pollute the environment would prolly result in people loosing their jobs and would lead to a low happiness meter which is equally important as aqi).

How we built it

Green Globe is a testament to the power of a robust tech stack:

Frontend: We crafted an immersive and responsive user experience using Three.js for stunning 3D visualizations, ensuring a captivating journey from the moment a user lands on our interactive globe.

Backend: Node.js with Express.js provides a solid foundation for our server-side logic, seamlessly handling user interactions, API calls, and data management.

AI Integration: The heart of Green Globe lies in its seamless integration with the Gemini AI. This powerful AI analyzes user-implemented policies, providing realistic predictions and driving the dynamic gameplay experience.

Database: We utilized MongoDB, deployed on a scalable AWS cluster, to manage our user data, policy information, and real-time leaderboard updates.

Email Functionality: User authentication and OTP verification are handled securely and reliably through Sendgrid, ensuring a smooth and trustworthy registration process.

Challenges we ran into

Developing Green Globe was an incredible journey filled with exciting challenges:

Balancing complexity and engagement: We strived to create a game that is both informative and engaging, requiring careful consideration to ensure the simulation's complexity doesn't overshadow the user experience.

Real-time data visualization: Displaying real-time updates on the map and user dashboards while maintaining optimal performance demanded creative solutions and meticulous optimization.

Developing a robust scoring algorithm: Creating a fair and comprehensive scoring system that considers the multifaceted impacts of policy decisions, balancing economic, environmental, and societal factors, was a significant challenge that we tackled head-on.

Hosting: This was our first time trying to host a website and we ran into a multitude of problems and were not able to host it completely.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Gamifying climate action: We successfully created an engaging and informative game that makes learning about climate change and policymaking both fun and insightful.

Utilizing cutting-edge AI: Our integration with the Gemini AI provides realistic policy analysis and adds depth to the gameplay experience. Building a dynamic and interactive platform: From the captivating 3D globe to the real-time leaderboard and data visualizations, Green Globe offers a seamless and engaging user experience.

Creating a community-driven platform: By incorporating features like policy upvoting and downvoting, we're fostering a community where users can contribute to the collective knowledge base.

Collaborating: We were able to collaborate as a team to bring together our collective vision to live using each of our expertise and creating something that might end up having a real world impact.

What we learned

New Technologies: We had to learn a lot of new tech to make this website like three.js, and the backend was completely new to use (node.js, express.js, and MongoDB).

UI Design: We spent a lot of time trying to make it user friendly and learnt a lot in that department

What's next for Green Globe

1. Expanding Reach Through Strategic Partnerships:

  • GreenGlobe will partner with education platforms to integrate the game into curriculums, making climate change learning interactive and engaging for students.

  • Collaborations with the UN and other organizations will leverage GreenGlobe's data for policy analysis and global climate action initiatives.

  • Partnerships with health services will raise awareness about the health impacts of pollution, showcasing the benefits of effective mitigation strategies within the game.

2. Scaling the Challenge with Real-World Scenarios:

  • New gameplay levels will feature real-world countries like India and China, introducing region-specific challenges and policy considerations.

  • The game will incorporate more complex policy options, such as carbon pricing and international agreements, to provide a more realistic and challenging experience.

    3. Deepening User Immersion Through Visual Storytelling:

  • The interactive map will become even more dynamic, visually reflecting policy decisions in real time. For example, building wind farms will result in visible windmills on the map.

  • Users will have access to enhanced data visualization tools to track their progress, analyze their policy effectiveness, and compare their strategies with others.
