Inspiration

UCR strives to be a sustainable campus, with active efforts to reduce food waste. Despite these efforts, we realized we lacked knowledge about sustainability, and believed that many of our peers were the same. After conducting user research, we learned that only 33.3% of UCR students are taking sustainable actions, and are being prevented by a lack of money, resources, and knowledge.

We wanted to give UCR students a space to learn more about eco-friendly lifestyles with their peers. Given the community of a lab and marketplace, we hope they will be able to tackle more of what is preventing them from being more sustainable.

What it does

Green’R is a platform that enables users to learn more about sustainability through forums and buy and sell eco-friendly products. This platform allows for more sustainability awareness and builds a better future for the UCR community.

How we built it

After settling on an idea, we used MediBang Paint to plan out the sketches for the pages and Procreate for icon design. Afterward, we moved the sketches to Figma and built a wireframe using various components. Finally, we created the prototype, complete with interactive pages and an example of a user.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges of this design-a-thon was ensuring that the user would be able to access all the various aspects of the website, as the number of pages was easily lost track of. Additionally, we ran into a problem where the transition between pages was altered for some unknown reason, leading us to trace every path to ensure smooth transitions for the user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment that we are proud of would be the full implementation of the foundation for our site, despite the number of pages required for it. Additionally, we are glad that we were able to take the feedback from our mentor and immediately integrate it into our platform for better user experience and design.

What we learned

From our mentor, we learned about creating an MVP and ensuring that the end product included all the aspects of how a consumer would think if they were to utilize our platform. Given this information, we were able to further improve our application.

What's next for Green'R

In the future, we hope that Green’R can be expanded to those outside of UCR. It could become tailored to other colleges, states, or even countries. There would ideally be a section to select the user’s region so items in the marketplace would be catered to a closer environment to the user. Additionally, we hope to improve some user experience aspects, such as being able to add more than one item to your cart, as well as being able to view one's cart. Finally, we hope to implement a chat and review feature into the marketplace to allow users to further gain an understanding of the person's product. Ultimately, these features would enable more awareness of sustainability around the world.
