Inspiration

This semester, I'm taking a class called Global Perspectives on Urban Sustainability. We've had to learn a lot about sustainable development and how different that looks for each major city in the world.

What it does

It asks the user what New York City borough they live in. Based on their choice, it tells them how much waste is generated by their borough, how much waste is actually recycled, and what local recycling initiatives are taking place near them.

How we built it

I started out by gathering waste and recycling data native to each New York City borough. Then, I used Google Data Studio as a data visualisation tool. Next, I designed the GreenBot webpages on Visual Studio Code, using HTML and CSS. After that, I embedded the links to the Google Data Studio reports in the HTML files. Finally, I used Github Pages to create a web domain.

Challenges we ran into

1) Having enough time. The project was intended to be three times bigger than it currently is.

2) Finding an appropriate source-code editor. It took several hours for me to find an editor that was user-friendly for a beginner, and utilised web browsers as live servers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of myself for not giving up. Trying to figure out two new languages within one weekend was very tasking and emotionally draining.

What we learned

I learned that markup languages are very detailed and tedious; I have so much more respect for anyone involved in web development.

What's next for GreenBot

In the near future, GreenBot will incorporate data related to energy consumption, public transit, and much more. Educational videos will be incorporated into the landing page to create a more immersive experience for the user.
