Inspiration

Supercharged by the Project Enviro theme, Greencoin is a mission to encourage students to get more involved in their community, learn about recycling and local recycling programs, and take action for the greater good.

What it does

Greencoin is a mobile app, which will function on both iOS and Android. It hosts two authentication providers—email and Google, allowing users to securely log in and save their data. It has a home page, a shop, for using Greencoins to purchase digital and physical items, a social page (for competing with friends!) and a recycling page, which has new updates, opportunities, and tips about recycling.

How we built it

We built this design for Greencoin using Figma, which is an online software for drawing up and prototyping mobile and web applications with high fidelity.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some challenges while building Greencoin, especially during the ideation stage. We had to come up with a viable way to encourage students to pitch in in their communities and recycle. Our project is unique because we deliberately conducted market research to find the best incentives and models.

Greencoin is the result of that—it'd allow students to log their greenbins or recyclables every week, uploading a picture to the app. Students could join competitions with their friends to see who can recycle the most every week. All users start with a goal of 30 pounds a week, but they can challenge themselves to do more as they level up over time. Most importantly, for every pound recycled, the user receives one Greencoin—a secure digital currency that can be used in the store, or for donations.
