Inspiration
Throughout my environmental journey, I've always felt that my environmental actions didn't greatly impact the environment. I wanted to see my actions contributing to a greater environmental impact. I wanted support from others doing the same as me to give me increased motivation. This thought led me to want to create a social platform where I can connect with others passionate about the environment.
How we built it
I used Figma, a design app. Some of the features we used were interactions, components, and variants. I also used a free icon pack to use icons as buttons.
Challenges we ran into
Selecting fitting fonts and color schemes was one of my biggest challenges. Originally, I used a more handwritten, decorative font as the main font. I also used green as the background for the entire page. After finishing a few pages and trying the prototype, I realized the design was too much. I needed to dial it back, making the design more simplistic and user-friendly. In the end, I was able to revamp the design, making it look more professional with a simple font and sleek grey background.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of GreenSync's logo. I went through many iterations to obtain the right leaf shape. Furthermore, it took me a while to find a design that was straightforward yet unique and representative of my app. The arrows in the logo represent the "syncing" and connecting that the app does for its users.
I am also proud of being able to create a fully fleshed-out prototype out of inspiration. Initially, I knew why I wanted to create GreenSync, but I haven't thought of anything else. I'm proud that I stuck to my inspiration, worked consistently, and was able to follow through. There are some unique features I was able to develop along the way of creating the prototype, like the adding event feature. As it all came together in the end, I felt a great sense of accomplishment.
What we learned
Designing an app from scratch is not easy. The orientation of each element, like the size and the position, is difficult to get down. There isn't necessarily a correct answer, so you have to keep testing the prototype and getting a sense of how the layout feels. I've developed an appreciation for all the useful apps I've used, like Gmail or Google Docs. These apps' usability is convenient, and the buttons all seem to be in the right place.
What's next for GreenSync
I hope to show this app to people or companies in the design or environmental science field. Hopefully, they can give me insightful feedback on where I can improve the prototype. Next, I aim to convert this prototype to code and create a mobile application. It would be awesome if this app could be of good use to people who want to help sustain the environment.
