Inspiration

We’ve been bored and alone during quarantine, but we also couldn’t find the motivation to sit through long YouTube lessons to make use of time either. Our crave for novel skills and knowledge inspired us to make this platform that helps us teach each other the “useless” skills we know in short videos. By doing so, we're also reconnecting with one another.

What it does

PaperPlanes provides a platform for people to connect by letting them share, learn skills, and communicate based on common skill interests. It’s the perfect place for aimless entertainment and fateful friendships.

How we built it

We simulated the UI design using Figma and built the front-end using React JS, HTML, and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

While we all had an understanding of Java, we came in with no knowledge of how to build a web app. In the time allotted, we crash-coursed the languages and libraries required for this project. It was also a challenge to make the sidebar buttons function.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing our first web app using languages learnt within 36 hours. We were worried that our idea would be too ambitious, but we’re very proud that our hack resembles our initial Figma designs.

What we learned

How a web app works and how to build one from scratch; how the front-end and back-end work together; incredibly rapid yet accurate searches on Stack-Overflow in desperation.

What's next for Group#16

We loved our first experience and look forward to competing in more hackathons in the future! Due to the time constraint, we weren’t able to build the back-end for PaperPlanes, so we’re planning on learning the relevant languages and frameworks. PaperPlanes will be our test-subject as we continue our learning.
