Inspiration
We’ve all had a skill we wanted to learn—a new language, coding practice, working out—but let’s be honest: sticking to habits is hard. The biggest challenges aren’t just difficulty, but discipline and consistency. Sure, joining a club or team can help, but not everyone has the time to commit to fixed schedules. For full-time students especially, the reality of juggling classes, homework, and part-time jobs makes it nearly impossible to coordinate.
That’s where Habinu comes in.
What it does
Habinu is a habit-tracking app designed to give you the power of social accountability—without the time pressure. To log a habit, you don’t just check a box—you take a quick photo of yourself actually doing it. This makes it harder to “cheat,” while reinforcing the most important step: starting.
Your progress is then shared with friends through your feed. You see what they’re working on, and they see your consistency—creating a community of encouragement, accountability, and motivation. It’s like having a team that keeps you honest and inspired, but on your own schedule.
How we built it
For the app base, we used Flutter/dart. The app was composed of several pages with a Node.js back-end for support. The team utilized Git/GitHub, working with branches and merge requests for a clean workflow.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into trouble implementing the back-end. We weren't sure of the correct approach to making a server for our app, and spent a large amount of time researching and discussing different methods. After choosing Node.js, our team was limited by time to fully implement a full function server
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have a fully visual app that is responsive and displays the bare bones of our project. We have a complete UI, and logical functions to save data on the user's local device.
What we learned
As first time app developers, we all learned how to use Flutter. Learning this versatile tool is very useful for our future projects and for building upon this project.
What's next for Habinu
We hope to complete a full back-end for this project in order to start our social network. Habinu is meant to be a habit-sharing platform among friends. Once the social aspect is complete, we can promote it and have users share their habits world-wide. We also plan on using some image-processing model to automatically confirm whether a user's image actually consists of evidence of their habit completion, as well as for basic content moderation (no inappropriate images, etc)
