Inspiration
As students, a shared problem we had was finding study groups on campus which matched our goals Inspired by apps like tinder and group, we developed Study Rader, a web application which helps you find study groups nearby with people who overlap with your learning style, subject, and grade.
What it does
Displays a selection of sessions with each having a specific subject category to help the user decide which they wish to join. Each session has a limited capacity and can only hold a certain number of participants. We didn't have the time but other features we wanted to implement were allowing students to match with others based on their preferences and characteristics including, but not limited to, class year, study preferences, and availability. And the ability to create sub communities for different courses.
How we built it
We used the Flask framework for our backend with modules like SQAlchemy and Request to create our database and manage API calls. The front end was made using HTML and CSS to create a GUI. We made endpoints to access and modify the database through forms, displaying it in a easy to understand way.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge was bringing our members up to sped since most of us had never used the flask framework. This made synchronous work difficult since we had to spend a lot of time learning and familiarizing ourselves with it. In addition this was our first Hackathon which made the lack of a formal topic difficult due there being too many options, resulting in us spending a lot of time researching.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to work fairly well considering it was our first hackathon. Although our project isn't the most polished, there is plenty of room for improvement and we each learned plenty about software development.
What we learned
We applied our skills in creating a team project. We delegated tasks, allowing each of us to understanding front end/back end development as well as how to work independently on tasks while integrating them into a larger overall project.
What's next for Study Rader [Hackathon 2026]
We hope to develop this site more past the Hackathon. This would helps us familiarize ourselves with other forms of software development such as potentially creating an app version. It would also allow us to dive deeper into the principals behind software development and figure out what we are more comfortable with; front end or back end.
