Inspiration
Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a golf club for senior citizens, which sparked my curiosity about how they manage physically demanding tasks like shoveling snow and lifting heavy boxes. This experience inspired me to create HelpForSeniors, a platform designed to simplify chores for seniors. My demo video draws inspiration from a project called "Cultivate" that I encountered at HarvestHacks. I was impressed by their presentation and aimed to create a similarly engaging video.
What it does
HelpForSeniors begins by asking users for their name and age. If the user is under 55, the app restricts access, as it is specifically tailored for seniors. After confirming eligibility, users can specify the task they need assistance with. While I plan to expand the list of available jobs in the future, I focused on a manageable selection for this initial version. Once a task is entered, the app connects users with available volunteers. Users can then provide their address and schedule a convenient time for assistance, making it incredibly easy for seniors to receive help.
How I built it
I developed the application using Python. Unfortunately, my friend was unable to join me, which extended the coding process. I initially envisioned transforming this project into a fully functional mobile app, but due to my current skill set, I opted to work with what I know. I believe that if my friend had been present, we could have successfully developed it into a mobile application.
Challenges I ran into
Like any project, I encountered some initial bugs that required troubleshooting, but I was able to resolve them. The absence of my friend also contributed to a longer coding timeline. Before conceptualizing HelpForSeniors, I struggled to find a project idea, which led to moments of frustration. However, reflecting on my volunteering experience reignited my determination to bring this project to life.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This marks my first hackathon experience, and I take great pride in finally participating. I had heard numerous stories about the excitement and learning opportunities at hackathons, so it was fulfilling to immerse myself in that environment.
What I learned
I gained valuable insights into my coding abilities and discovered that working independently can be challenging. However, it also fosters creativity and self-reliance in developing and refining ideas.
What's next for Hackcoming 2 Project
I aspire to evolve HelpForSeniors into a fully functional mobile app. I believe it has the potential to be a valuable resource for senior citizens worldwide, enhancing their quality of life by providing accessible assistance.
