Inspiration
The MLH website does not give a good way to view local Hacks, making it hard to plan in advance.
What it does
HackSpot allows you to input your location and map out the closest hacks to you.
How we built it
We built a front end with HTML and bootstrap, the back end was built through python to web scrape the MLH website.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a lot of issues parsing the data from the MLH website. After getting the information from it, another issue was having our program convert zipcodes into coordinates to put on to the map. This lead to another challenge of sorting the stored hacks by distance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we successfully pulled data automatically from the MLH website and moved into our Firebase DB.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Python syntax, Google Maps API, and converting to React.
What's next for HackSpot
We would like to add more functionality in the future: allowing for hackers to organize ridesharing, cheapest Hackathons to attend, and to notify users of Hackathons openings.
