🚀 Inspiration

We noticed a growing frustration with greenwashing and misleading eco-labels. Despite the demand for sustainable choices, there was no accessible way for people to verify the real environmental impact of everyday products. That sparked our idea — to make sustainability transparent, trustworthy, and tech-enabled.

What it does

Our project scans any product and instantly reveals a sustainability score based on verifiable environmental data. It calculates this score using key factors like carbon footprint, material recyclability, packaging waste, supply chain emissions, and data reliability — all personalized to what users care about most.

How we built it

We integrated the Gemini Vision API to visually identify products and the Gemini Pro Thinking Model to extract, analyze, and score sustainability data. Our backend uses a custom weighted index to calculate an accurate, category-specific sustainability score. The system cross-verifies claims with third-party certifications, lifecycle assessments, and environmental reports.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was filtering out biased or low-quality data sources while maintaining real-time performance. We also had to carefully tune the weighting of our scoring model so that results remained fair, reliable, and adaptable across product categories.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working end-to-end scanner that decodes greenwashing and gives users instant access to verified impact data. We’re also proud of building a platform-ready system that can scale beyond consumers — into procurement, policy, and global retail.

What we learned

We deepened our knowledge of working with AI vision and reasoning models, learned to critically evaluate sustainability data, and built a scalable backend that blends transparency with tech.

What's next for HackTuah

We’re exploring ways to expand our work into government partnerships, ESG platforms, and B2B sustainability scoring tools. Our vision is to build more tools that empower people and institutions to make climate-smart decisions — with clarity, confidence, and real impact.
