Inspiration
Our game, Hallpass Hero, draws inspiration from Papers, Please, transforming the concept of border control into the chaotic world of school hallways. Instead of inspecting immigration documents, players take on the role of a diligent hall pass monitor, tasked with stopping students from illegally wandering the halls without valid passes.
What it does
In Hallpass Hero, players must check hall passes, spot forgeries, and decide who gets to proceed and who gets sent back to class. With escalating difficulty, unexpected twists, and mischievous students trying to outsmart the system, every shift in the hallway is a test of vigilance and decision-making.
To bring the students to life, we implemented Animal Crossing-style gibberish voices with dynamic pitch shifting—meaning frantic students sound more desperate, while the cool and collected ones speak in a laid-back tone.
How we built it
We developed Hallpass Hero in Unity over the course of 24 hours, tackling both 2D game mechanics and UI design from scratch. Using C# scripting and Unity’s built-in tools, we created a streamlined, engaging gameplay loop that captures the tension and humor of being a hall pass enforcer.
Challenges we ran into
Since our team wasn’t very experienced with Unity, getting up to speed with 2D game development was a major hurdle. We also spent time refining our core mechanics to make the gameplay feel both challenging and fun, iterating on the balance between difficulty and enjoyment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a playable game in under 24 hours despite our limited Unity experience
- Added engaging features beyond our original plan, making the game feel polished and dynamic
- Created a humorous yet immersive experience that brings the Papers, Please concept into a new setting
What we learned
- The fundamentals of 2D Unity development, including scripting, animations, and UI design
- How to scope a game project effectively within a limited timeframe
- The importance of iterating on mechanics to fine-tune the player experience
What's next for Hallpass Hero
We're excited about the potential to expand Hallpass Hero with new mechanics, such as random events, more complex student behaviors, and additional hall monitors with unique abilities. Whether it’s improving visuals, adding voice lines, or increasing replayability, we’d love to take our hallway patrol duties to the next level!
