Inspiration

Making plans with friends should be easy, but often becomes complicated due to different interests, conflicting schedules, and unique accessibility needs. Motivated by our own experiences of missed connections and recognizing this universal struggle among students, we created HangSmart—an app dedicated to bringing people together by identifying common activities everyone can genuinely enjoy.

What it does

HangSmart simplifies social planning by using AI-driven recommendations to find activities that unite groups of friends with varying interests, schedules, and accessibility requirements. Whether you love movies, sports, dining, hiking, or have specific accessibility considerations, HangSmart identifies shared activities that everyone will appreciate, fostering meaningful connections through enjoyable experiences.

How we built it

We developed HangSmart using a modern, intuitive tech stack to deliver personalized, inclusive recommendations:

  • Frontend: JavaScript and React for seamless and engaging user interactions.
  • Backend: Firebase for smooth authentication, real-time group management, and effortless data synchronization.
  • AI Integration: Perplexity’s API to intelligently match diverse user interests and preferences.
  • Location Integration: Google Places and Maps APIs to suggest optimal locations and activities accessible for all.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating multiple APIs effectively to produce accurate, inclusive recommendations was our biggest technical challenge. Specifically, ensuring consistent support for diverse accessibility features (like audio captioning or wheelchair accessibility) required careful data management and thoughtful UI design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully merged complex API integrations into an intuitive, inclusive platform. Most importantly, we’re proud of creating a feature that genuinely connects people of different interests and needs, making every social gathering enjoyable and accessible to all.

What we learned

Through HangSmart, we deepened our expertise in handling asynchronous API integrations, designing inclusive user experiences, and leveraging AI for social good. We learned firsthand how technology can bridge differences to enhance real-world interactions.

What's next for HangSmart

Moving forward, we’ll enhance HangSmart by incorporating real-time event bookings and advanced personalization through machine learning. We’ll continually refine our accessibility features based on user feedback, ensuring HangSmart always connects people through activities everyone can share and enjoy.
