Inspiration

In 2020, Hawker Culture in Singapore was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Recognising the relative decline of youth pursuing careers in the hawker field, we decided to create a mock up of a hawker store using modern technologies like VR and the Unity Game Engine in order to spark an interest in being a hawker in the new generation.

What it does

We used Unity Game Engine coupled with the XR Interaction Toolkit to create an immersive and engaging simulation of a hawker stall. The player is given the opportunity to create one of Singapore's most iconic dishes, Chicken Rice.

How we built it

All assets and scripts were created from scratch over 24 hours using Blender and Visual Studio and imported into Unity.

Challenges we ran into

  • We had ludicrously little knowledge of cooking and had to look for recipies online on our own online.
  • Little to no Unity and C# knowledge prior to planning for the projects
  • Buggy interactions due to the physics engine
  • Collectively sharing 3 brain cells.
  • No time to sleep so super tired.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We managed to create a working scene.
  • We all learned new skills that may be useful to us in the software sector in the future.

What we learned

We have learnt more about how VR technologies work with the Unity Game Engine. VR is an emerging sector in technology and having knowledge in development with it and similar technologies will be extremely useful for us

What's next for HawkerMan

We plan to create more scenes with iconic Singaporean Hawker cuisine. We also plan to add a food service game mode to let players experience the hustle and bustle of manning a food stall. All in all this will help to further engage users and inspire them to possibly pursue a career in cooking, helping to preserve our precious hawker culture in Singapore.
