Inspiration
After hearing about many complaints about the traditional therapist-hunting process, we found that there could be a quicker and less stressful solution to finding a trustworthy confidant — so we decided to take action. Healthscape offers a way to eliminate the awkward and time-consuming task of finding a therapist, sponsor or someone to hear you out. For individuals with busy schedules and tight wallets, Healthscape is a safe space where anyone can log on and talk to someone about their problems. We focussed on mental health because it can lead to many severe mental illnesses. It affects how we think, feel, and act. During the pandemic, the mental health of many has declined. According to a study released in March from the survey on COVID-19 and mental health showed that 27% of young adults aged 18 to 24 suffered from major depressive disorder. Seeing this, we wish to help people struggling with mental health conditions by making it more accessible to everyone at anytime. Often times, people cannot afford a therapists, especially young adults who are new graduates or trying to find work in these hard times. So, Healthscape can solve both these problems by providing low-cost access to multiple therapists as well as free consultations online.
What it does
Healthscape is made to make wellness accessible to everyone, at any time and any place. At the click of a button users can chat with a licensed professional, a sponsor or a member of the community going through similar experiences. Aimed at combatting the loneliness of grief or the persistent thoughts that keep you awake at night, Healthscape is a refuge for your mind.
How we built it
We first utilized Figma to create our prototypes for both a web and mobile version of our idea, Healthscape. We then made use of html, javascript and css to create a more solidified version of our website.
Challenges we ran into
Since we are all beginners at this hackathon, we did not know what to expect and had a bit of a rough start. We decided to use Figma to create our prototype. However, most of us did not have any knowledge of Figma before the hackathon. In addition, we did not have much experience coding with Javascript, which slowed our project down but allowed us to research and learn more along the way. One of the challenges we faced was that after signing up with four of our members, one of the members left the team without any notice. So, we had to rethink the collaboration schedule and who would do what.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that despite facing the difficulties, we worked hard to finish this project in 36 hours. All of us are proud to learn new technologies or languages through workshops and by doing this project. We are especially proud of completing and presenting this project here since this is the first time all three of us have participated in a hackathon.
What we learned
Some of us learned and used Figma for the first time, some of us learned Github and Javascript for the first time as well. Also, we learned about how to do pitch and how to record on Zoom. Overall, this entire process was very insightful and educative.
What's next for Healthscape
Next step for Healthscape would be to improve its website to have more features such as donations. In order to provide free therapy-sessions with experts, we need some funding and volunteer therapists who are willing to help out with our cause to make therapy more accessible to everyone. We would also improve our Healthscape app by adding games to the app, using Twilio to send SMS messages for notifications of progress.
